did i just sell my skills

14 August 2026

TLDRI put six of my agent skills in a public repo under an MIT licence and handed them to strangers. Then I stopped and asked the obvious thing: what did I think was mine in the first place.

did i just sell my skills

I entered a competition about whether agent skills actually work. Then I built six of them, wrote each one down as a SKILL.md file, put them in a public repo under an MIT licence, and handed the whole thing to strangers to run. Somewhere in the middle of that I stopped and asked the obvious thing. If a skill is a file anyone can download and run, and I just gave six of mine away, what did I think was mine in the first place.

Let me be precise about what I entered, because the names blur and the blur is where the worry hides. The competition is about measuring agent skill effectiveness. My entry is called Skill Issue. The six skills are the product, or the thing that looks like the product. Three different objects, and the anxiety lives in the gap between the last two.

Here is the part that should have made me feel worse and instead made me feel better. The entry does not prove the skills work. It is a null. I ran the panel, I ran the controls, and the honest finding was that on my own board I could not detect these six skills helping an agent at all. The shipped library is six SKILL.md files, 30.1 KB, and the one compliance check passes from a clean clone. I ran it again today to be sure. So the fear, I sold my skills, runs straight into a funnier fact. I packaged six skills and could not show they lift anything. If they cannot be shown to help, I did not sell my edge. At most I sold some formatting.

Then take the question seriously, because the flip answer is too easy. Suppose the skills did work. Suppose each of the six files carried real lift. Then yes, a SKILL.md is a commodity by design. It is meant to be opened by a stranger and do the same thing for them that it does for me. The entire point of writing a skill down is that the writing down travels. So if the value were in the files, giving them away would be exactly the mistake the title is afraid of.

But that is not where the value turned out to sit. Reading my own entry back, the thing I would defend is not any of the six skills. It is the sentence, we cannot show these six skills lift an agent, written under my name, in a competition where every incentive points at claiming a number. The entry reports its discrimination rate before its lift number. It runs two identical no-skill arms and finds them disagreeing by as much as the effect I was chasing. It retracts a harm result I had already written down, because I found the evidence against it myself. The entry claims exactly one thing as new, and I will let it make that claim on its own page rather than repeat it here.

None of that is in the six files. It is in the refusal to trust the green number. That refusal is the thing that did not package.

Which would be a clean ending, except it isn't, and I know it isn't. The refusal is also a skill. I have literally written it down. I keep one skill that asks what would prove this is right before I build it, and another that asks whether a stranger could run it at all. The discipline I just called the part that is mine is the part I am most systematically turning into files a stranger can run. So the recursion closes on me. If I can write down how I distrust a number, that becomes a SKILL.md too, and then I have sold that as well.

I do not have the resolution, so I will not pretend to one. I entered a competition about measuring skills, built the measurement, gave away the files, and kept the judgment, and then I started writing the judgment down too, because writing things down is the only move I actually know. Somewhere in there the line between what is mine and what is a file I have not written yet stopped being a line.

did i sell my skills. I sold the ones that were always going to be sellable, and I am now busy packaging the one I told myself was mine. The uncomfortable part is not that I gave six skills away. It is that I can no longer point at the thing I would not.
